School Structure

BOS was founded in 1998 as a private co-educational day school. BOS has three divisions: Primary School (4 to 9 years), Middle School (10 to 13 years) and High School (14 to 18 years).

Student Body

There are currently 670 students aged between 3 and 18 from Nursery to Grade 12. Admission is open to both local and international students. While a substantial proportion of students are Azerbaijani, international students represent thirty different nationalities from the business and diplomatic communities in Baku.

BOS Faculty

BOS has 95 full-time and 10 part-time local, and 13 full-time international faculty members representing ten nationalities. All academic staff members have teaching qualifications, many of whom have masters and doctorates. Regular professional development is provided on an on-going basis. The number of support staff members are 66, including management.

Class Size

The maximum class size is 20-22.

Admission

BOS admits students at all grade levels throughout the year depending on available spaces. BOS evaluates each candidate based on previous student’s school reports, English and Mathematics entrance tests, and an interview or interaction with parents and student(s). BOS only admits students who are able to cope with the demands of a challenging curriculum.

Curriculum

BOS offers The International Early Years Curriculum (3 to 9 years), The International Primary Curriculum (10 to 13 years), Cambridge Primary and Cambridge Secondary Programmes leading to IGCSE in grade 10 and International A/S and A levels in grades 11 and 12. Azerbaijani students take the State Diploma examinations in grade 11. English is the language of instruction, while students can choose to learn Azerbaijani, Russian and an additional foreign language – French, German or Spanish. Aspects of the Azerbaijan state curriculum offered for all students at BOS include:

 Azerbaijani Language and Literature;

 History and Geography of Azerbaijan.

 English as an Additional Language

BOS provides English Language Support for non-native English speakers who have difficulty in accessing the curriculum across the School. All teachers are trained in ‘Teaching young children in English in multilingual contexts’ and ‘Teaching ESL students in mainstream classrooms’ to support language learners. The EAL Department offers both withdrawal and in class support on a case by case basis.

Enrichment

For non-Azerbaijani students who do not choose to take Azerbaijani or Russian languages an Enrichment programme is in place to encourage project-based learning and further study in areas of the curriculum that interest and stimulates the student.

Learning Support

BOS is able to offer students support with mild learning difficulties across the school through the Learning Support Department. The Department consists of learning support teachers and assistants, a Head of learning support and a School Psychologist.

Education Abroad

Strong ties exist between BOS and colleges and universities in Azerbaijan and abroad. BOS has a full time College counselor who provides effective support to assist students to gain admittance to tertiary educational institutions across the globe. Since its foundation in 1998, 100% of BOS graduates have been placed into Colleges and Universities.

BOS Reporting Procedures

BOS operates on a semester calendar year. Each semester is divided into two. Quarterly progress reports are issued in November and March, and full written reports at the end of semester 1 (February) and at the end of Year (June).

Extracurricular Activities

BOS promotes participation in the creative arts, intellectual, cultural and sports activities to support the school guiding statements and vision of learning. Student involvement in in areas such as- Drama, Dance, Art, Music, Technology, MUN ensure a balanced educational programme. BOS is also committed to students’ physical well- being and offers a range of sports. We believe that extracurricular activities can teach students important life skills, including perseverance, teamwork and sportsmanship.
